national Volunteer Week at Sonshine Community Services

We are joining our community throughout Calgary and beyond in celebrating the valuable individuals who give their time, energy and efforts freely to our organizations and the families we serve. Our work cannot be completed to the highest quality without volunteers! Sonshine benefits from 100 volunteers a year that are actively supporting and creating programs and services.

This year the theme of National Volunteer Week is “Volunteering Weaves Us Together,” and Sonshine couldn’t agree more! Our volunteers are vital to our organization’s success supporting our clients throughout their journey, creating a welcoming environment and community. Thank you to everyone who has helped us make a difference!”

Our Volunteer Coordinator, Samantha Mills, would like to highlight these primary roles and duties that our volunteers complete for the families at Sonshine. They do an outstanding job of working in Sonshine autonomously, creating and working on behalf of the families to satisfy impactful programs with them. 

-Staging Volunteers providing a comfortable and inviting safe-haven for clients to call home

-Front Desk/Reception Support providing a warm and friendly face as our residents enter Sonshine

-Library restock providing resources, education, and entertainment for all ages

– A team of food support volunteer programs providing weekly Fresh Produce courtesy of YYC Growers, bi-weekly milk and eggs program and monthly meat program. These supports help conquer food insecurities and offer peace of mind knowing food will be on the table

-The Blessingdales Market where volunteers provide a welcoming space allowing our clients to have independence and dignity in obtaining non-perishable food items, toiletries, and cleaning products
